Sisyphus’ Rock: Welcome to the Frustrating World of Weight Loss and Gain

I have been thin and I have been heavy, never really fat, but certainly plump. At my thinnest, I wore a size 4. At my  heaviest, a 14. On my wedding day, I weighed 123 lbs. A honeymoon later, I was up to the 130s. I had a gift registry filled with kitchen toys and no job. I cooked, I ate and I gained. A couple of years later, I got pregnant and ballooned up to 176 lbs. My daughter is now three-years-old and in that time I have lost and gained, lost and gained the same 10-15 lbs.

I read diet books like other people read novels. From the blockbuster Atkins and Zone plans, to the more obscure Rotation Diet and Dukan. I’ve tried Body for Life and Leanness Lifestyle, the Perricone Promise and the Paleo Diet. I’ve tried detox plans from Ann Louise Gittleman’s Fast Track Detox, to Dr. Alejandro Junger’s Clean. I’ve read Natalia Rose’s vegan-raw food-detox books, I’ve read Skinny Bitch. I’ve even read the Maker’s Diet and Mindful Eating. You name it, I’ve tried it.

I have walked and I have run. I’ve done TaeBo and Power Yoga. I’ve tried Bootcamp and Pilates. I have spent hours in the gym and amassed an impressive workout DVD collection. Again, you name it, I’ve tried it.

I am an expert at starting a diet and workout plan and following it to the letter. For a couple of weeks. But as soon as I start seeing results, and start feeling good about my progress, temptation waxes and motivation wanes. I have a stressful full-time job and a rambunctious toddler. Food is my drug of choice. It calms, comforts and eventually, mocks. And before I realize it, all my effort is for naught. Sisyphus’ rock has rolled all the way down and it’s time to push it back up. Again.
